About Glenada
The Backstory
The original Clubhouse was an adjunct to the old Glenada Hotel, operated by C. B. Gerard in the late 19th Century. It was a building known as the Casino which an advertising pamphlet of the day described as "fronting right on the water, fitted with a ballroom, café, [and] ladies' billiard room."
In the early 1900’s, the hotel was razed, and residents of the Village of Cold Spring had the privilege of using the Casino and beach. Nearly twenty years later, when several young married couples moved to Cold Spring Harbor, Mrs. George S. Franklin, suggested the formation of a club which might be a pleasant place for these young people to take their children to swim as well as an asset to the community.
Following an organizational meeting in February, 1921, a letter of invitation was sent out to prospective members. The idea was enthusiastically received, and on April 19 the Cold Spring Harbor Beach Club was formally incorporated.
